Guide to Choosing Small-Diameter Fiberglass Rods for Roman Shade Liners
Available sizes: 2.0 / 2.5 / 3 / 3.5 / 4 mm
1. Window size & shape
Roman shades is most suitable tall, narrow windows.
2. Fabric weight
Light fabric: Thin rods (2.0–3 mm) are enough.
Heavy / blackout fabric: Pick thicker rods (3–4 mm) to hold folds straight.
Common length reference paired with diameter:
2.0 mm: ≤ 60 cm (very narrow small windows, sheer light fabric)
2.5 mm: 40–80 cm (narrow windows, sheer / light linen)
3.0 mm: 60–110 cm (most common household width, light‑medium fabric)
3.5 mm: 90–140 cm (medium-wide windows, medium-weight fabric)
4.0 mm: 120–170 cm (wide windows, thick blackout fabric)
3. Budget & look consistency
Balance your budget with the final appearance. Choose the minimum diameter needed for clean folds. Over-sized rods add cost and extra weight.
4. Custom dimensions (diameter + length)
Use the reference table above as a starting point, then adjust by your actual finished shade width and fabric.
Too thin for the width → middle sags, crooked folds.
Rod too long → catches sides when lifting.
5. Shade operation type (add, matches our earlier content)
Manual: Consider the support effect of rods, follow the width-diameter guide
Semi-auto self-lowering: Keep rod weight consistent
Motorized: Use the lightest rod to reduce motor load
6. Shade style
Folding Roman: One rod per fold pocket
Fan / wave style: Only a few support rods, mostly bottom weighted rod to keep edge from curling
Quick note: Fabric width must fit the rod diameter.
